The Denison

Located on the picturesque East Coast of Tasmania, the Denison region is rich in history and natural beauty.  Originally inhabited by the Great Oyster Bay tribe, the area then became used by trappers and hunters during early settlement.

At the height of the whaling trade Bicheno was the northern most shore based whaling station, before the discovery of coal in the early 1800’s transformed the remote area into a bustling coastal community.

Post WWII Tasmanian workers began gravitating towards the East Coast to relax and enjoy summers at the beach.  Constructing basic houses from building scraps, fondly referred to as shacks.  Today, tourism and recreation are now the primary industries that underpin the contemporary culture of the Denison region.
